Linocut is a wonderful graphic medium and it is possible to create prints without the need for a press or expensive studio equipment. With printmaker Hester Cox as your guide, you will learn all the basics that you need to make your own linocut prints at home. Then move on to explore how to create a multi-colour print using reduction methods and careful registration.

– Learn how to prepare designs suitable for linocutting.
– Reverse and transfer them to the lino.
– Learn about the different tools and mark making.
– Discover what papers and inks are suitable for printing.
– Explore how to use rollers to apply and blend colour.
– Learn about registration and make a registration board.
– Create a multi-colour print using the reduction method.

What to expect

A weekly course at ArtisOn is designed to take you away from it all and provide the environment, the time and the guidance you need to create and develop your skills. The weekly format allows you to develop your work and ideas between sessions, you can work more at your own pace and really feel you have moved on from week one to the end.

You can expect the usual warm welcome, skilled and friendly tutors plus the chance to meet and get to know like-minded people keen to share ideas and experiences.

There may be two courses going on and we encourage everyone to mingle and be nosey about what the others are up to!

Arrive in time to meet other participants over a cup of tea or coffee and biscuits before beginning your session at the appointed time. There will be a mid-session break for refreshments and a chance to talk over progress with others. Due to the requirement for change-overs between morning/afternoon/evening sessions for weekly courses, the finish time given is fairly crucial – the session should not overrun.

All refreshments are included before and during the session each week although lunch is not. However, by popular demand we do provide a light lunch consisting of soup or similar and a pudding from 12:00pm until just after 1:00pm so that anyone attending either morning or afternoon sessions need not go hungry! The cost is £5 and it can be booked and paid for each week for the following week. It would be helpful if you could let us know if you require lunch for week 1.

What you’ll need to bring with you

Wear clothes you don't mind getting messed up.
Feel free to bring any examples of work that inspires you or other work of your own.
A sketchbook would be handy but not essential.

“All processes were well explained. I appreciated the hand out and tips on where to buy equipment etc. I enjoyed learning something new at a pace I could cope with an a friendly environment.”
